Writing Samples

My favorite approach to nonfiction writing is to weave storytelling with research to bring alive concepts and enlighten readers about different perspectives or educate them about various topics. The following samples highlight my style of nonfiction writing.

When Is the Right Time to Hire an Editor?

I’m writing a book, and I’m not sure when I need to hire an editor. When is the right time?” This is a question I often hear from aspiring writers and authors, and when they ask, my mind begins to swirl with a myriad of possibilities. How do I respond? Well, it all depends.

Caregivers and Coping with Dementia

“Mom, what have you been doing today?”

“Oh, I’ve been reading good books and some silly children’s stories. I went to church this morning, and now I’m trying to take a nap.”

I start putting away Alice’s laundry as my husband Chuck moves in closer to sit near his mother. She only recognizes us by our voices now, her sight having faded to full blindness. Yet her spirits are high, and her voice is kind.

The Surprising Benefits of Writing by Hand

I sat swinging on my daughter’s back porch while my grandkids jumped on the trampoline to the music of Imagine Dragons. My youngest grandson was smitten with Believer, and it played on a continuous loop for about thirty minutes. As I wrote in my journal, I recorded conversations and described the beautiful quirks and characteristics of some of my favorite people on the planet.

A Caregiver Story

Who’s there?” The childlike voice was panicky. I moved in closer to Alice’s makeshift bed.

“It’s me, Mom. It’s Kim. You’re at our house.” I was struck by the question, the desperate need for reassurance. She held out both arms. “You’re safe, Mom. You’re with us.” She hugged me long and hard.

5 Tips to Inspire Your Writing

There are many ways to approach writing, and sometimes it’s a struggle to come up with a topic. One of my favorite places to look for inspiration is personal experience: that funny conversation with a cashier, the way nuthatches hang upside down on a bird feeder, what my husband thinks I said when his hearing aids aren’t in. I used to think that I had nothing interesting to say. But no one sees life from my angle better than I do.
